About Fremont County The 2004 US census shows 49,016 people living in Fremont County. The largest employer in the area is the Federal and State correctional systems and the health care field comes in second. The Arkansas River flows through the entire 60-mile length of Fremont County and is the most popular river for commercial rafting in the United States. The rafting activity along with the other area attractions in the area guarantees Fremont County a growing tourism industry. Some of the area attractions include the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park (the world's highest suspension bridge), Buckskin Joe Town & Railway, the Royal Gorge Route (a tourist train through the Royal Gorge), the Gold Belt Tour (a national scenic by-way) and the Dinosaur Museum and Discovery Center. Some of the other activities in the area include world-class fishing, hunting, hiking, bicycling and rock climbing. Fremont County enjoys mild and hospitable climate year round with very few days of extreme weather each year. The warm days are cooled off in the evenings and the snowfall is usually light and melts quickly. The humidity remains comfortably low throughout the year. Cañon City Cañon City is the seat of Fremont County and has a population just above 16,000 people. Cañon City is fortunate to have a River Walk along the Arkansas River providing beautiful scenary for recreation and excercise. There are many small parks among the residential neighborhoods and beautiful mountain parks surrounding the community. Cañon City is located just 100 miles from Denver, 45 miles from Colorado Springs and 35 miles from Pueblo. Pueblo Community College Fremont Campus is housed in a new facility with state-of-the-art technology, small classes and strong academic programs. The hospital in Cañon City has undergone a big renovation which includes a new ICU, new surgery center, new private patient rooms and a Health & Wellness Institute. There is also a new out-patient Surgery Center. Florence Florence has a population of about 3,900 people and is well known for all of its antique shops. There are miles of hiking and horseback riding trails located nearby and a 200-acre mountain park with picnic and restroom facilities. Museum and history buffs will want to visit the Price Pioneer Museum for lots of displays of artifacts from the early pioneer days. The Florence volunteer first aid staff is one of the best in the state. Florence takes great pride in being a "great little town" where you're only a stranger once. Penrose Penrose is the gateway to Fremont County, located 30 miles south of Colorado Springs and 24 miles west of Pueblo at the crossroads of Highways 50 and 115. The 4,630 residents of Penrose enjoy lots of elbow room. Most of the pioneers that built Penrose were farmers and ranchers and several of them started many of the current apple and cherry orchards. Because of Penrose's location, it has become a great place for families to live who commute to Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Florence, and Cañon City for work or pleasure. | |
